24 June 2014

Sector Focused Career Fair brings together oil and gas industry professionals

TRONOH, 24 JUNE 2014: Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp), in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), hosted its Sector Focused Career Fair focusing on engineering, oil, gas and energy (SFCFUTPTEC). The two-day event was organised by the Technology, Education and Career (TEC), a secretariat under UTP that helps to link up its graduates to career opportunities.

The event, officiated by YB Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, saw  more than 50 top companies from the engineering, oil, gas and energy sector participating at the event.

Top employers, including PETRONAS, Shell, Murphy Oil, Sapura Kencana, Schlumberger, Orbitage, Petra Energy, SBM Offshore, Continental Automotive, Talisman and Scomi Oil Tools, ran booths and answered questions about their businesses and how interested participants can start to work for them.

“Malaysia has made great strides in its journey to transform into a developed high income nation by 2020. To enable us to successfully reach this goal requires the right quantity and quality of talent. The Government is committed towards enhancing the availability of talent, particularly by nurturing local Malaysian talent in this industry,” said YB Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid at the official launch today.

Potential talents, undergraduates and graduates also explored employment and internship opportunities through engagement sessions with key employers such as PETRONAS, Sapura Kencana, Schlumberger and CGG.

“The SFCFUTPTEC is a great platform for graduates who are keen to embark on a career with Malaysia’s Engineering, Oil, Gas and Energy sector. We are continuously partnering with top employers to find avenues to train talents both at entry and experienced levels, to meet the nation’s aspiration of creating 52,300 jobs in the oil and gas sector by 2020,” said Johan Mahmood Merican, Chief Executive Officer of TalentCorp.

Forty-five student leaders were among the 250 students who took part in an engagement session with Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid. SFCFUTPTEC also organised a roundtable discussion that brought together over 60 delegates from the oil and gas industry to discuss possible areas of improvement for graduates in meeting industry requirements.

We are very delighted to see the energy and enthusiasm of the participants at this career fair. A Sector Focused Career Fair like this gives employers an avenue to nurture and guide young talents to careers that will inspire and excite them, and at the same time, contribute to advancing our talent pool and nation,” said Ramlan Malek, President of the Malaysian Oil & Gas Services Council (MOGSC).

Among the activities featured were the Future Scientist Eco-Challenge 2014, designed to educate and inspire young high school students to overcome challenges in tackling energy, water and food issues. Other activities such as the Innovation City Challenge explored entrepreneurship and communications skills among the participants.

SFCFs are held at higher learning institutions throughout the year and are a TalentCorp initiative to increase awareness of new career opportunities for new talents, undergraduates and graduates. They also provide an ideal platform for companies and employers to scout for potential talent in their relevant sectors.

About 5000 graduates, students and members of the public attended the career fair.
